I've cut thousands of code wheels this way and have used the idea when waiting for a hob was not possible. The trick is in the cutter geometry and an exact match of the tooth space. Since you have one tooth doing the work of many you have to reduce feed rate. A spline or gear invoulute wood require a cnc grinder and exact dimensions for the profile. It's easier to mill them with a side cutter that's already available.
