Thank you very much for the reply. I understand what you are saying about checking the index worm for backlash but when you are refering to the axial play in the shaft, are you talking about the spindle where the gear mounts to or the spindle that the hob mounts on? Does the play in the gears under the hobslide not really cause any problems? When the machine is off, the gears under the hobslide have enough backlash that the od of the flywheel will move back and forth about an inch.
