Greg- It can be done- you will fight hob swivel clearance issues etc, but the large part diameter will help you in this case. Trying this with a RH hob will be a bad idea as the cutting forces will overhaul the work spindle unless your index worm backlash is extremely low, and as Ron said above, give you a terrible finish. Set up your feedrate very low- .005"-.008" as you need to adjust for the high helix angle.
You don't say what the part material is- that could be a big factor on a job like this.
