Hi,
The "shank" style hobs I've used required a special driver that replaces the usual hob arbor. This accepts the keyed end of the shank hob. A collet/bearing/outboard assembly slips over the other end and provides both outboard support and "0" end play thrust at the other end.

I made a collet with smaller ID to fit the outboard shank, but that was a machine with a bronze bearing outboard support. I'm sure something similar would work for other bearing types.

I think the center is used for grinding and sharpening only.
