Working on a gear shop, I have to cut many customs spiral bevel gear sets on generation type machines. I have the range of cutters from 1.5” to 12”. All cutters are standard finisher.
Please note that both members are generated but not format or single side method.
Based on my experience, I select the cutter # that completes the whole depth of tooth as well as tooth thickness and tooth height according to calculation.
That’s why I have to use separate cutter for gear and pinion. This makes the difference in contact pattern because of cutter diameters.
For example I use #12-20°, 6 inches cutter for gear, but on measuring its not exact 6 inches in diameter. It has some plus or minus value from 6 inches. Like 6.130” or 5.990” etc. To remove these errors I have to re-align the tooth on tester before finalizing the set (that is the difference between both cutters diameters) and obviously it takes more time than our schedule but gives accurate results.
Is there any device that indicates the exact cutter diameters? Please also inform how to select the exact cutter numbers according to gear ratio? I believe it should be calculation series to calculate cutter number, if you have these series, kindly forward it to me for which I will be thankful to you.
I do not have production line so far and it is easier in production line to set a contact pattern. So any enquiry regarding bevel gears in production will warmly welcome.
