Manual Gleason grinders and their grinding wheels are not designed to remove metal continuously from a blank. Since a gear is normally roughed to remove excess in the root and to leave grinding stock only on the flanks, this avoids grinding in the root.
Manual grinders use basically the same tool path motion as manual cutter/generators. Seems like the chip load for cutting would be too great for grinding from solid - please correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe some CNC spiral generators have been designed to grind from solid??

This is a very interesting question - maybe someone could add some info there...
