In 1926 Packard switched to hypoid gears. I'm trying to determine what the advantages were beyond larger pinion shaft and lower center of gravity. These gears produce a generally steady loading with rotary sliding contacts. What are the benefits of this? Is it a smoother mesh? Does it have anything to do with lubrication? Packard had a "special lubricant" for these gears that I have been unable to find a spec for.
