Thanks for the comments. The issue is that others have tried to recreate/reverse engineer spares without success (always too tight) so we decided to do the design foerensics to 'see' what was the original intention. Thats when it went all crazy, and some better engineering minds than mine just sit and scratch their heads.
There are 3 planet gears. The material was drawn steel rod (sorry, don't know makeup yet) and the ring was bronze. The other very intersting point is that all the wear shows up on the planets, in all cases the bronze/brass ring is like new, even after almost 100 years.
