I was referring to a plane perpendicular to axis of a cutter.
One way of designing the cutters for involute gears is to calculate a modified involute profile on that plane. The cutting edges of the cutter are not contained on that plane.
Yes I design non - involute cutters. I calculate the surfaces of the tool so the resulting workpiece geometry stays right in the entire working range of the tool as it is being sharpened throught its entire life. The mathematics behind are given in books of prof. Tadeusz Nieszporek.
