Was confronted with same issue recently,
1HP 3-phase motor on an old lathe I had acquired.
I did have 220v 1-phase available however.
Looked at phase converters, etc., but settled
on a "black box" I found which takes the 1-phase
220v and converts to 3-phase 220 electronically.
Found one in N.Y. new for less than $200.00.
The particular box I got handles up to 1.5 HP
I'm using it to power a couple 3-phase machines
by way of putting a 4-conductor recepticle on the
output of the box and plugging the machine I want
to use into the box. Can't use both machines at
once,of course.) A great benifit of this is that
the box can be controlled (simple add of a reostat
mounted externally) to provide essentially zero to
60Hz output thus providing very nice speed control
of the 3-phase motor with excellent torque even
at low speeds. Great on the lathe.
