We are having some troubles with a Barber Colman 2 1/2-4 gear hobber. We are having a lot of problems with the carraiage not feeding smoothly. With a dial indicator on it the carriage sits still, then moves forward at about the right speed then "jumps" forward and then gets pushed back. We are trying to cut 20 and 24 pitch gears about 2" to 2 1/2" in diameter. It does cut the gears but it can't be good for the hob doing this.
Does anybody know the specs on these machines? Is 20 pitch too coarse?
