So, i found myself interested in bevel gear geometry. The fundamental aspects for 90°, interesecting shaft bevel gears are fairly well explained, about how-and-why cone angles, apexes, pitch angles and the usual jive.
BUT
I find myself posing an alternative question of, why not?
If I desire a set of bevel gears at 90°, at say a 2:1 ratio, why are the gear's and pinion's respective angle NOT 45° each? It seems to me that if i had two gear blanks of equal thickness, (but unequal diameter) each provided with an angle of 45° and involute teeth added thereto, that these gears would assemble and run happily at 90°.
I do realize that these gears would not follow conventional gear design parameters. So what?
Or, phrased differently, so my cone line apexes don't intersect... You got a problem with that?
So... just wondering...
