Three gear sets have been fabricated using a 5-axis CNC programmable milling machine.

An extensive gear software package with graphical interface will be available this summer (june/july 2007) to facilitate such gear fabrication. This software package will be available without cost or registration. Graphical display, animation, design rating (viz., FEM fillet stress, contact stress, film thickness, reaction forces and torques, tooth deflection), and manufacturing data will be included as part of a single GUI package. Export gear files, G-codes, and fabrication will not be part of the package.

A vertical mill is currently being re-fitted for 5-axis CNC milling of gear pairs (spur, helical, bevel/hypoid, non-circular, and worm).
