How about a fine pitch worm and worm gear? with a spring loaded worm support that keeps contact with the gear, and a suitable position encoder with feedback control, it should be accurate. Even without position feedback, it could be made more mechanically accurate by using a large diameter wormgear with a lot of teeth, and a single start worm. The finer the pitch, the greater the number of teeth & positioning accuracy. For high shock loads, you probably would not want to depend on the worm & gear mesh for locking.
