I am investigating an interesting spline failure on a mining truck.
The male spline on the transmission shows about a helical wear toward its end (furthest any support)while the female part in the differential shows the wear quite far inside (the parts need to match of course). Also the first part of the male spline is just about worn to a round!
The other interesting thing is that the wear occurs on the non-drive side, so I assume that the torque applied to the assembly by the motor doesn't matter. It seems to wear when the vehicle is either braking or coasting, transferring torque through the wheels, axle into the differential and finally into the diff/transmission interface (spline).
Any idea why this excessive wear occurs? Any ideas what to check for?
