I was in the same boat as you some time back.
To realy know weather the cutting edge is where it belongs I made a gauge which I placed in the work head. this gauge had a milled face with a 20 degree back slope. the slope started from the exact center of the gauge. With the work head axis perpendicular to the cutter slides and the milled face para to cutter action and all jig offset figured in I was able to reset the original guage block to reflect this machine.
this required removing the tapered pins.Since this was done I have no problem with setups matching outcomes.
