Please excuse my ignorance if this seems a stupid question, but...
It seems gears (Cars and bikes etc) are always set as stages. 1st gear, 2nd gear etc. How come there isnt some form of smooth ratio progression from low to high? With a bike for instance effort would be constant but gearing would be on a sliding scale related to speed and topography. I appreciate meshing would be difficult but is this insurmountable?
I was thinking of a small cog moving in and out of the inside surface of a cone to give the different ratios as required.
Any comments anyone?
