It sounds like the 1" gap is doing some machine damage. Backlash in the ram drive is taken up slowly as the ram accelerates at the start of the cut, but when the ram drops into the gap and unloads the backlash, it is hammering against the 2nd face at full velocity with violent takeup in the slack. This is probably doing damage to the ram drive. Normally there should be imperceptible amount of slack in the ram drive mechanism, but I suspect there is considerable amount of slack or backlash now. In other words, if you position the ram half way down the down stroke, and try to lift it with a pry bar, you should not be able to move it without backdriving the drive mechanism itself. I picked the half-way down position so that any tooth damage at that position would show up. Backlash due to a worn keyway should show up in any position of the ram.
