I did - I looked at the gear ratio program you mentioned, plus others, and they work as advertised. These work well for replacing tables such as "10,000 ratios and change gears".

But to set up a gear hob for a helical gear requires calculating the required decimal ratios which these ratio programs don't do. Getting the setup for a gear hob is not "brain surgery" but it is easy to make a mistake, and is a bit daunting for newcomers. Plus, it's irritating to try gear sets at the machine that are too big or too small to mesh.

I used a program we sell to do your setup. (Okay folks, I had an agenda...;^) It adapts to each of your machines and your change gear inventories, automates the process of getting the right change gears, and more (notice the measurement over wires?). All you do is enter your gear specs.

I've tooted my horn long enough - You can read all about it and download a free demo of CPC-HOB from this website at:

We also maintain a FAQ here that covers gear cutting topics that you might find interesting - (I'm always looking for new material of interest to add, too):

I may regret this, but I really would appreciate comments from others who are using CPC-HOB...good and bad! there must be somebody other than me, right?
