Thanks for the reply Bill. It sounds like you have a very good understanding of Bevel Gears and a lot of what you said cleared up some of my questions. We are most likely guilty of oversimplifying as you say. What we are trying to achieve is probably more difficult than we think. We are trying to create a bevel gear and pinion using the customer supplied data and all the bevel gear formulas available. We need this to make a program for cutting electrodes on a graphite mill. We have looked extensively for software that would be capable of this but with no success, so we are attempting to create the surfaces in CAD using formulas and fudging. It seems like bevel gears are simple if you generate them on machines designed for them, but its a gray area to cut them by other means because the tooth form is somewhat vague. Any help would be appreciated.
