I've never had one apart, but I think you need to take the slack out of the table bushing before adjusting the worm/table wormgear play.
Once I had a worn tapered bushing in B-C hob. We carefully machined off some of the bushing's thrust face to shorten the bushing and this brought the shaft-bushing fit back to OK.
With regard to the worm/wormgear: there can be backlash and worm end-play. Once the table bushing is fixed, you'll want to adjust both backlash and endplay to near-zero. Not zero, because as the pair heats up, backlash and endplay will reduce and could cause binding. So you want to watch for that.
