Hmmm... I wonder if, as the machine drops or raises the work to get taper, could that affect the helix angle? It would seem so to me, but I don't have anything to prove it.
Also, if you set the taper to "0", do you still get a lead error? That would point to some workpiece axis/table travel direction misalignment. Or, when you reverse the taper, does the lead error reverse as well?
