Crowning is usually added to a gear lead to eliminate end-bearing caused by improper assembly alignment or deflections from loads.
You can induce crown in hobbing if the machine has the capability to do so. You can also add crown via shaving either by machine motion or via plunge shaving, where you would put a reverse crown or hollow into the shave cutter.
You can also grind crown into a gear.
